When I was a child I had an imaginary friend. I hid him inside the toilet so that no one else would find him. His name was Farokh. I loved having secrets.

I was a star debater in senior school. But it never gave me any joy. I started throwing up before every debate and one time my mind went blank on stage. I stopped. And have been mortally afraid of public speaking since.

After university, I briefly worked at the BBC. I kept waiting for someone to figure out what a phoney I was. Someone from the London office called me, and said they were very excited about David Cameron’s visit. I said, “Oh me too! I absolutely adore his movies..”
